Wool rugs add warmth, elegance, and a touch of luxury to your living spaces. These rugs are highly durable and last for decades when maintained properly. Wool rugs are usually more expensive than other rugs & feel incredibly soft to the touch. However, the incidents are bound to happen & even the most carefully maintained wool rugs can get unwanted stains. So, if you are thinking of buying rugs online in Australia but wondering how you will keep your wool rugs stain-free, continue reading this blog.
Our blog will discuss all the necessary steps needed to clean a wool rug, including how to spot-treat stains as they happen and after they've set in.
5 Simple Steps to Clean a Wool Rug
Step 1- Shake the Rug
If you have enough outdoor space, take your rug outside & shake it to remove dirt, dust, hair, & other soil particles. Then, hang the rug over something strong, like a porch railing or the backs of chairs, and use a broomstick to hit the rug.
Step 2- Vacuum Both Sides of the Rug
Bring the rug back inside and vacuum both sides. Regular vacuuming, especially in busy areas, should be done at least once a week. In less-used rooms, vacuuming once a month is enough. Normally, you only vacuum the top, but flipping the rug and vacuuming the bottom will give it a deeper clean.
Step 3- Use a Dry Rug Shampoo
After beating and vacuuming both sides of the rug, check if it needs more cleaning. If it has stains or looks very dirty, you should spot-treat the stains or shampoo the whole rug. If it just needs a bit of freshening up, use a dry carpet shampoo. After you buy rugs online in Australia, check the manufacturer instructions to find out how much dry carpet shampoo to use on wool rugs, and apply it to the carpet. Use a soft-bristled brush to work the shampoo into the rug's fibres and let it sit for the recommended time. Then, vacuum both sides of the rug to remove the entire shampoo residue. If the rug is small enough, you can also take it outside and shake or beat the shampoo out of it.
Step 4- Spot Treatment for Stains
If there are small stains on the rug, use a wool-safe detergent or stain remover. Put the stain remover on a damp, light-coloured cloth and gently dab the stain until it is gone. Don't scrub, as this can make the wool fray and pill. After removing the stain, gently dab the area with a cloth dipped in clean water to get rid of any leftover detergent. Let the rug dry. If needed, use a vacuum to restore the rug's texture.
Step 5- Deep Clean the Rug
Wool rugs with extensive stains or large areas of dirt from foot traffic need a thorough deep clean, you can do this using a carpet cleaning machine.
